The Illinois Energy Professionals Association (ILEPA) is a self-regulating body aimed at standardizing processes and ensuring agents, brokers, and consultants (A/B/C) maintain an acceptable level of market knowledge and responsibility while transacting in the marketplace. Members of the A/B/C indirect sales channel community have come together with a common goal to provide a forum for developing common interests and upholding the integrity and maintaining the honor in the business of the deregulated retail energy market in Illinois.

In any new and emerging market, there are often a plethora of new market participants which transact in the new market.

Until October 12, 2007 there are no state mandates regulating these A/B/C third-party sales channels and even now there is no real baseline established as to how customers, indirect sales representatives, and suppliers are to interact in the marketplace. This has produced a need for an organization such as ILEPA. The charter members of this organization are representatives from companies committed to furthering the deregulated retail energy market in Illinois; these companies have worked together to define the core values of the organization. This includes the "Code of Conduct," standardization of applicable forms and materials, and other items which characterize the organization.
